8 March events to help Philly strive for gender equity in tech and biz leadership

This March at Technical.ly, we’re diving into the topic of gender equity in tech, an expansion of our previous editorial calendar coverage of women in tech — which we’ve historically timed with Women’s History Month.

This year, we’ve widened our coverage, realizing that people of all underrepresented genders, including nonbinary and trans individuals, are very much a part of this community we cover. Throughout this month, we’re taking a closer look at increasing inclusion, removing barriers and overcoming unconscious bias.

We’re focusing on solutions: How can we increase access for all genders in the tech world?

We’ll be diving into this topic further, but for now, mark your calendars with these events meant to increase your leadership mentality, make a holistic and transparent plan for hiring with diversity and inclusion in mind, and celebrate all genders that make this tech community strong.

The Women’s Film Festival 2020 preview 

This event is meant to celebrate women in the film and entertainment industry, and offer a chance to sneak a peak at the films for 2020. Expect light food, a cash bar and networking opportunities.

Brand Therapy with Amber Burns

This morning workshop is aimed toward freelancers, entrepreneurs and others who want to work on their personal brand. Writer and content creator Burns will walk through what makes a personal brand successful on and offline and how to leverage it in your professional life.

Creating a Diverse & Inclusive Workplace

Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance is hosting this breakfast and workshop to explore best practices for recruiting, hiring and retaining diverse candidates, and how to create an inclusive work environment. Along with discussion, organizers will continue conversations and check in on “action plan progress,” the event page says: “Participants will leave the session with actionable practices, tips and supplemental resources to support the creation of strategies that will yield long-term results.”

Women in Data Science Conference 

This one-day technical conference in Philadelphia mirrors the annual Global Women in Data Science conference held at Stanford University and across the world. Attendees will hear about the latest in data science research, technical talks, panels and recruiting and networking opportunities. “Our vision is to foster a community of data scientists and supporters in Philadelphia from various backgrounds, both in industry and academia,” the event’s info page says. “All genders are invited to attend.”

Take the Lead

This workshop, hosted by author and leadership coach Sara Wachter-Boettcher, will focus on advocating for yourself and finding your leadership skills. The event is put on by Collective Strength, an event series for women, nonbinary and femme folks who are looking to build connections and celebrate professional successes. You’ll learn how to reframe situations to feel empowered, bring your own perspective and agendas to work, and ask for what you need.

Women Makers: A Night of Pairings from Local Female Owned Businesses

If you’re looking for a low-key event to connect with women business owners and celebrate female movers and shakers, check out this Fishtown event. Four locally produced beverages will be paired with selected small bites, and proceeds from the event will go to the Philadelphia chapter of the Pink Boots Society, created to assist, inspire and encourage women beer industry professionals to advance their careers through education.

Sisters Learning Code: Intermediate HTML & CSS

Join Philly Tech Sistas for this project-based workshop. This class is an expansion of the org’s HTML/CSS intro class, and will take a deeper look at front-end design and development. This event works for folks looking to up their skills or transition into the tech field. Bring a bit of coding knowledge and a laptop (or rent one from the org); lunch will be provided.

Supplier Diversity Panel

Free Library of Philadelphia’s Business Resource and Innovation Center (BRIC) is hosting a panel on the importance of supplier diversity. Experts will talk about the process, doing business with the state or city, what agencies and companies look for in contractors, and how to grow and fund your business. Expect networking opportunities and bring questions — there’s time for a Q&A.
