Events Roundup: Hear founder failures and learn to network better this September

Say goodbye to summertime with a slew of events and opportunities this month.

Folks looking to network, career change, level up their skills or learn more about the tech industry will have a wealth of opportunities to do so at events throughout this September.

We’re looking forward to “Founding Failures,” an evening of local business leaders sharing the failures and mistakes that ultimately lead to to their success stories is coming to coworking space 1776’s Rittenhouse campus on Sept. 18. Earlier this year, Technically Media CEO Chris Wink shared his own “failure” story: the time he split his pants in a pitch meeting. Yikes. Cue more stories like this.

Founding Failures

The event will by lead by Bruce Marable, founder of Employee Cycle, and event goers will have the chance hear stories from Omar Woodard, executive director behind the GreenLight Fund; Melissa Rautenberg and Steven Picanza, the founders of The Agency Guy Inc.; Ringo Roseman of The Bagel Place; and Sheri Kurdakul from VictimsVoice, among others.

Disability Justice for Technologists

Join a local accessibility meetup group for an event exploring modern disability history and what technologists can learn from it to apply to their work. P’unk Avenue’s Embry Wood Owen, a UX researcher, writer and advocate who advances access for disabled people in public space, will speak at this Philly Accessibility Meetup event. “You will leave with a firmer foundation for your accessibility work,” the event description says.

The Art of Networking

1776 will host “The Art of Networking: How to Create Authentic Connection & Extend Your Reach” this month. Ami Watkin and Laena McCarthy of The Integrated Hustle will lead the event and talk about the power of networking and how to leverage existing and new connections to further your career. “Networking can seem slimy or tedious, but it doesn’t have to be,” the event page says.

Improve your EQ: Emotional Intelligence at the Museum

This workshop, led by Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art Director of Museum Education Monica Zimmerman, will introduce how art and museums are integral to developing a key skill in the business marketplace: emotional intelligence (EQ). “Art and psychology come together in a participatory experience that introduces how PAFA trains executives and healthcare professionals to be more empathic and more aware of the implicit biases we all hold,” the event page says.

Philly Tech Sistas Volunteer Appreciation Night

Come hang out with the people who have made coding education group Philly Tech Sistas grow and succeed over the years at this appreciation event. The organization is celebrating its first class of its Sisters Learning Code program, a monthly introduction to coding, which launched this summer. This event is for past volunteers, instructors, mentors and anyone looking to meet new people in the tech industry.
