This Week in Jobs: Special Print Edition

But, like, in email form.

Bananas or cocaine? Hard to say. (Photo by Flickr user Ian Ransley, used under a Creative Commons license)
Editor's note: This TWIJ first appeared as a special print edition distributed to attendees of Super Meetup Philly on Sept. 25, 2018.

Editor’s Note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ (“twidge”) here at Technical.ly HQ). Below is this week’s edition. (Here’s the last one we published on the site (it’s meant to live in your inbox).)

Though we’ve been rigorously trained not to do this since childhood, sometimes we slip up and judge a book by its cover. We see a bunch of bananas, for instance, and think, “Hey, there’s a bunch of bananas.”

But sometimes it’s not just a bunch of bananas, it’s only a couple of bananas poorly packed atop a hidden bed of cocaine worth $18 million.

What we’re getting at, albeit very slowly, is that we urge you to treat your job search like the Texas Department of Criminal Justice recently treated a suspiciously large donation of unsolicited bananas. Really dig in and peel back the layers of every opportunity. Apply for a role even if you don’t fit every single qualification. Network with a new group of people. Uncover all the hidden bounties that the job-hunting experience has to offer.

And for heaven’s sake, eat a piece of fruit once in a while. It’s good for you. Cocaine, not so much.

Hot Headlines

As if we needed any more proof that The Terminator was a perfect movie franchise well ahead of its time, South Philly makerspace NextFab is offering a six-week robotic arm training program to prepare participants for high-paying, high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing. The Readiness for Employment in Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Program (RERAMP), requires zero technical experience and is designed to provide opportunities for people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to NextFab’s resources. Apply here by Dec. 1.

Comcast led reporters through its swanky new skyscraper last week. The $1.5 billion Comcast Technology Center is now the tallest building in the city and features a gym, artwork by local artists and 330 “huddle rooms” for comfy, yet sophisticated collaboration. Currently, six of the 60 floors are operational, with new teams moving in each Monday. As the company moves to literal new heights, it has made room for an evolved lineup of offerings, including internet of things, smartphone service and startup accelerator Lift Labs. And with any expansion comes our two favorite words: new jobs!

Calling all Latinx innovators. Got a spare 54 hours laying around? Techstars is hosting a Startup Weekend for Latinx in tech at 1776’s University City location, Oct. 5–7. The startup-a-thon will feature some essential tips and tools from top founders. Tix can be found here. Get on it.

Cool Jobs

Marketing gurus/ninjas/whatever-the-not-passé-buzzword-is-these-days, your jobs have arrived:

  • RevZilla, the ecommerce retailer for motorcycle enthusiasts is hiring a Digital Merchandising Specialist. No mention if wearing leather pants will help your chances, but 2–4 years ecommerce and Google Analytics experience should do the trick.
  • Digital pathology platform Proscia is looking for a Director of Marketing to spearhead the department’s goals and strategic direction. Healthcare experience required. Outside-the-box thinker desired.
  • Mobile content provider ReachMobi seeks a Biddable Media Manager for someone who lives and breathes digital performance media. If your lungs pump content instead of oxygen, smash that apply button (and seek medical assistance).

Engineers, the financial world needs you:

  • Fintech startup Perpay is hiring Full Stack Engineers (plural!) to build out its ever-growing microlending platform. Fancy cold brew and four-legged fur friends included in the office experience.
  • Vanguard seeks a Senior Full Stack Developer–Client Experiences Lab. Surprising perks abound for “crewmembers” at this large, ship-themed investment firm.
  • Ascensus, the platform that helps people save for big stuff like retirement and college, is looking for a Senior Scrum Master to model Agile values. Wonder how that plays out during Philly Fashion Week…

Extra, extra!

Remember, if the job hunt ever feels overwhelming or gets you down, at the end of the day you were NOT the person who sent 540 pounds of lazily hidden cocaine straight into the hands of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (we hope). So you’re doing just fine, sweetie, and we’re with you.

Good luck and have fun today, jobseekers!
