The morning of Oct. 22 came in humid and unseasonably warm, and Bre Pettis was done with being Extremely Logged on.

“I’m an early adopter of twitter,” he tweeted at 8:58 a.m. that morning. “It was playful and fun. Now it feels weaponized.”

Pettis is the founder of MakerBot and one of the longest tenured of those in the Brooklyn tech scene. With his new company, Bantam Tools, he’s trying again in the desktop-printing world.

He’s also not the first person to leave Twitter on bad terms recently.

Comedian Joe Mande wrote a long thing on Twitter about why he was leaving the platform that connected with a lot of people (29,000 likes and counting). In it, Mande said Twitter was like the internet’s version of smoking embalming fluid (wet is bad) and wrote, “Here’s the thing: Twitter’s not fun anymore. It’s vicious and ugly.”

Pettis said also that he thought life without Twitter and his more than 50,000 followers would improve.

“Unfollowed all and deleting the app from my phone,” he wrote. “Expecting quality of life to go up.”

Pettis said his account would remain for personal announcements and for friends’ projects.
