Cornhole Cup competition debuts at Constitution Yards this Saturday

There's still time to sign up to compete in the charity event benefiting Connecting Generations.

Wilmington may not have the NFL and the NBA, but we do have the Blue Rocks, the 87ers and, now, cornhole. At least for one day.
You might know the game of cornhole as bag toss, sacks or beans — whatever you call it, the tailgating and backyard BBQ staple has been becoming more and more of a competitive sport. The American Cornhole Association even has a world championship event that killed it in the ratings on ESPN in July.

If you thought you’d never have a chance to compete in a non-pickup game of cornhole here in Wilmington, well, you were wrong. This Saturday, Sept. 9 from 2–5 p.m., you can come out and play in The Cornhole Cup, a double elimination cornhole tournament at Constitution Yards (aka the beer garden on the river, 301 Justison St.). The charity event benefits Connecting Generations — a volunteer mentor program that connects adults and at-risk youth in Delaware schools — and is sponsored by WhyFly.
Registration to play is $50 for a team or $25 for a single player, which helps fund Connecting Generations. The 1,500 volunteer mentors in 94 schools impact nearly 3,000 students each year. The event is free for spectators.

“The 2017 Cornhole Cup is sure to be a fun event at a fantastic venue,” said Lynda Neef, event coordinator at Connecting Generations. “Constitution Yards is the gem of the Wilmington Riverfront — I’m thrilled that Connecting Generations is hosting this new event there.”
Many local businesses, including Kreston Liquors and Hayman Creative, have donated prizes for the competition and raffles, among other things. WhyFly donated a new cornhole set for the winner of the competition and will offer free WiFi at the event, as well as free installation for the first 10 people to sign up for the service.
In addition to the cornhole competition itself, the event will feature a rotating list of craft beer, a full menu of BBQ-style food, giant Jenga, badminton, bocce ball and an arcade.
