Virtual and augmented reality technology has blown up in the past year within the Brooklyn tech scene. Industry City recently welcomed a VR-equipment company, we experienced a VR production of Hamlet put on by NYU’s MAGNET, and much of IFP Film Week, held in Dumbo in September, was devoted to VR and AR in film.
On Tuesday, the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator (BF+DA), run by Pratt Institute, will host a discussion on what all these developments mean for the fashion industry.
The talk will be led by Sultan Barodawala, a content specialist at Manhattan-based VR company YouVisit, and Alap Parikh, a Brooklyn-based fellow in Cornell Tech’s ArtFoo program, which is focused on art and technology. Tickets for the talk are $10 for the general public, with free and discounted tickets available for BF+DA members.
The talk hits upon two burgeoning tech segments in the borough. In addition to the VR and AR developments mentioned above, several Brooklyn companies and programs are on the forefront of bringing greater tech savvy to the fashion industry. The BF+DA itself is helping to lead the charge, but we’ve also covered a number of other fashion-tech companies based here in Brooklyn, including Pvilion and Thursday Finest — the cofounder of which, Veronica Harbick, was just named Technologist of the Year at our 2016 Brooklyn Innovation Awards last night.
