Parking your lil shared car is about to get a lot easier

The Department of Transportation announced a plan to give 600 parking spaces to carshares.

The NYC Department of Transportation announced on Monday it would designate 600 parking spaces around the city for use by carsharing services.

According to a report in the Post, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg told City Council that most of the spots would be in Manhattan, but that all five boroughs would be included in the experiment, which will last two years. She included Park Slope as one Brooklyn neighborhood where it could make sense.
Trottenberg did not say whether the city would charge the companies for the spots, only that it would ask to see their data on the usage of the spots, according to a report in Streetsblog.
We asked Brooklyn’s reigning lil shared car company car2go to confirm if they would be included in the plan. Despite being included in the DOT’s carshare map, however, a company spokesman said they were not part of the planning process. Still, he assumed that, as a carshare company, the 600 pilot spots would be fair game for car2go cars. The pilot is still in the early planning stages, so they anticipate they’ll find out details as it goes along.
“From day one, we’ve enjoyed a very positive working relationship with NYC DOT, and we look forward to continued collaboration to bring New Yorkers great mobility options,” car2go NY General Manager Tom McNeil said in a statement.
Brooklyn newcomer ReachNow did not respond to comment by press time.
The move would seem to add another variable to the upcoming carshare battles of Brooklyn, where parking spaces are a scarce commodity.
