Nexus Innovation Program Wins National Award for Excellence [press release]: “The national award recognizes innovative programs focused on developing economic prosperity. […] PhilaU’s Nexus Innovation program, which was selected as a UEDA award finalist in August, brings the innovation process out of the classroom as transdisciplinary student teams collaborate to provide partners with solutions to real-world challenges.”

DNA Selfie, Newest STEAM Program for Girls, Is More Than Skin-Deep [press release]: “The [University City Science Center] program will run from September to December 2014 with 14 7th and 8th grade girls from The City School at Walnut Street. DNA Selfie uses team design projects to engage girls in the exploration of their own cells and DNA. Participants are using photo-microscopy to create self-portraits of their isolated DNA and then transform their ‘selfies’ using new tools and technology. This inquiry-based program gives middle-school girls the opportunity to delve deeper into computer design software and technology – such as a laser cutter and vinyl cutter – to recreate and morph representations of their DNA and cell pictures.”

Fried Chicken, Donuts, and Big Idea for Attacking Poverty [FastCompany]: “The concept of Rooster Soup Company is straightforward: Use the chicken backs and bones to make delicious soup, sell the soup to customers, and donate all of the net profits to the Hospitality Collaborative.” We covered Rooster Soup’s successful Kickstarter campaign.

Department of Making + Doing Forms Group of Power Users for Feedback, Brings Making to the Streets [Generocity]: “Currently, its working on projects related to the grant from ArtPlace, which focuses on bringing making to the streets. As a result, DM+D has worked with teenagers and college students to create a mobile maker cart to take to the streets of Philadelphia. The cart has already made appearances at the Lancaster Avenue Jazz Festival and the Lancaster Avenue Night Market, and it will make its next appearance as a Pop-Up Maker Station as part of Design Philadelphia on Saturday, October 11, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.”
