February or March 2015 is the latest estimate for the launch of SEPTA’s new payment technology, Philly Mag reported. (Last we heard, it was winter 2015, but who’s keeping track?) The new smartcards and electronic fobs that riders will use will be called SEPTA Key, according to a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filing that Philly Mag found.
Last April, John McGee, the head of SEPTA’s smart card program, left SEPTA to work for the company that’s helping create the SEPTA Key. McGee will not work on the SEPTA project, according to the Inquirer.
