DuckDuckGo hits average of 4M daily searches // Artisan Mobile raises $2k for Philly schools [Startup Roundup]

Advice from student founder Dan Shipper on bootstrapping a six-figure business in school, a mobile payment startup raises cash and online ordering platform Zuppler opens a Conshohocken office.

WHO’S GETTING FUNDED?

Parametric Dining, a startup whose mobile payment app CheckMate is being piloted at University City’s City Tap House, raised $100,000, according to an SEC filing.

Wayne-based medical device firm InSyte Medical Technologies raised $675,000, according to an SEC filing. Last October, it raised $2.1 million, according to an SEC filing.

Cloudamize, or “Mint.com for cloud services,” raised $1.2 million from local investors, we reported last week.

First Round Capital participated in a $2.6 million round for San Francisco-based Sproutling, a startup that sells wearable sleep monitors for infants, Forbes reported.

The National Law Journal wrote about Drexel professor Karl Okamoto, who cofounded legal education startup Apprennet, and his massive open online courses (MOOCs), describing him as a legal educator who has gotten MOOCs right. On his blog, Dan Shipper, the Penn senior behind Dorm Room Fund-backed cobrowsing startup Firefly, offers his thoughts on what he learned bootstrapping a six-figure business from school.

WHO’S MAKING MOVES?

DuckDuckGo has hit an average of four million daily searches so far in September, InfoWorld reported. The Paoli-based search engine that promises not to track users saw a huge jump in searches after June’s PRISM scandal. Since June, when it hit 2.5 million daily searches, traffic has steadily been rising. The traditionally small office — it’s at 10 employees right now — is growing its team, said founder Gabe Weinberg.

Old City’s Artisan Mobile raised nearly $2,000 for the School District of Philadelphia, according to a tweet from CEO Bob Moul. Artisan matched donations from its employees, and Moul matched the total, according to another tweet.
