UMD telecom startup closes seed round of $1.5M [Startup Roundup]

who’s getting funded?

Astrapi Corporation, based from the TAP incubator at the University of Maryland, College Park, has raised $1.5 million in seed funding, according to a press release. The telecommunications startup, which produces a patented signal modulation technology, will use the funding to develop a commercially viable product to sell to first customers.
Dormify, based in Rockville, has raised $1.125 million in equity, according to SEC filings. The online store and lifestyle startup sells furniture and accessories for decorating college dorm rooms.
Flexible Medical Systems, based in Rockville, has raised $492,752 in equity of an offered $675,000, according to SEC filings. The biotech startup has “developed technology to extract interstitial fluid for analysis without penetrating the skin,” according to its website.

who’s making moves?

Edge Web Hosting, which works locally from a data center just near Lexington Market, is opening a third data center in Phoenix, Ariz., in August, according to BmoreMedia.
According to a new report from the Private Equity Growth Capital Council, private equity firms invested $1.8 billion in companies based in Maryland in 2012.
The Baltimore Technology Park, with 11,000 square feet of data center space along Russell Street in the Carroll-Camden Industrial Area of the city, has been acquired by St. Louis-based Cequel Data Centers LLC for an undisclosed amount.
