Earth Starter, which recently took home $50,000 in cash for winning the University of Maryland‘s Cupid’s Cup business competition, is now competing for $1 million in seed funding.
Cofounders Phil Weiner and John Gorby have entered the Hult Prize Global Online Competition, which is soliciting submissions from students worldwide with startup social ventures. This year’s prize theme, according to the Hult Prize Facebook page, is “global food security.”
The competition is awarding $1 million to a student startup that can help “get safe, sufficient, affordable and easily accessible food to the 200 million people who live in urban slums.”
With five days left for people to vote on projects, Earth Starter’s video for its product, the Nourishmat — a “garden blanket” that allows people to grow vegetables and herbs in less time and without gardening experience — has received 394 votes.
