The deluge of content available on the Internet makes sorting through it all challenging for voracious readers, particularly those of us without enough of a filter.
Enter NewsUp, a mobile application that turns reading news into an interactive game, wherein users are delivered articles about subjects they’re interested in, sorted separately from the day’s latest headlines. The app gradually learns which topics matter to readers, and then pushes those stories. Users earn points by reading their personalized content, answering trivia questions and sharing articles with friends. Points earned are then used to collect different rewards.
The team has launched a new website and is planning on launching private beta in the coming months.

“NewsUp is reinventing the newspaper for the mobile generation,” says CEO and co-founder Andrew Schuster. “In a world where news illiteracy is on the rise, NewsUp makes news enjoyable by rewarding users for reading and comprehending personalized content.”
In the fall, NewsUp joined the incubator at the Emerging Technology Center, and is one of the five startups part of Accelerate Baltimore‘s inaugural class. (Schuster and and his fellow co-founders will be presenting at Demo Day this evening.) Chris Brandenburg, the chief technology officer of Canton-based Millennial Media, is one of NewsUp’s advisors.
“We’re in the early phases of testing and are fortunate to have a strong base of users who have already signed up,” Schuster says.  “We’re aiming to open our private beta in the fall.”
