A filmmaker’s warning after the Philly Geek Awards: ‘Don’t count Philly out’

The gathering of Philly's geek community inspired Sarah Prasuhn to write this love letter.

Sarah Prasuhn, a 34-year-old filmmaker raised in the midwest, came to Philly a year ago.
She was searching for a city to set up shop after getting priced out of Portland and, thanks to a remote membership at Indy Hall, she was already aware there was a strong geek community in town.
But something changed after she went to the 2016 Philly Geek Awards (which, full disclosure, was organized by Geekadelphia, Generocity and we at Technical.ly).
“I knew a few of the nominees, but nothing could have prepared me for the overwhelming sense of community and belonging I would feel tonight,” wrote Prasuhn in a Medium post on Monday.

In her event recap — aptly titled “Don’t count Philly out: a Geek Awards tale” — Prasuhn opened up about the woes of the West Coast entertainment industry, professed her admiration for Philly nerds and pointed out the sense of possibility within the local creative community.

We first heard of Prasuhn as the director of this lovely profile of Indy Hall-based artist Saul Rosenbaum.
“When I left tonight I found myself grateful. Grateful that Philly is the place I’m in now. Grateful that I left LA, grateful for humans who do things, and grateful that whatever I create in this place will have a home,” she wrote.
