On the Market: Lead Mayor Kenney’s workforce development team

Mayor Jim Kenney revealed an ambitious plan for his first year in office during his budget address last week. Two business-focused announcements caught our eye.
First, the Commerce Department plans on hiring a director of international investment, who will focus on both attracting international companies to open up shop in Philly and helping local companies find international customers. See the job description here. This isn’t an entirely new position, said Commerce Director Chief of Staff Sylvie Gallier-Howard. It was previously held by Sapna Bhatt, but her job was more focused on the business attraction side of things, Gallier-Howard said. The job pays around $80,000.
This job is notable for its possibility. Nutter was known for raising Philadelphia’s profile outside of the country. Remember how he went on international trade missions to London and Israel? Some have wondered if Kenney, who has shown more of an interest and focus on the local, would be interested in doing the same. If you get this gig, it seems like you could play that role in the Kenney administration.
The other job we noticed was a new role: Senior Director for Talent Development. You’d be part of Kenney’s new economic development efforts to help local companies and institutions hire from within Philadelphia and to build a talent pipeline. There is a STEM focus, but Gallier-Howard told us this effort would focus more on low-skilled jobs and vocational training (that made us think of the Urban Technology Project’s apprenticeship model).
See the job description here. We couldn’t get a salary quote from Gallier-Howard on this one because it’s a new role, so it’s not set in stone. You’d work closely with Jonathan Todd, a Nutter administration alum.

To take it in a different direction, check out this job listing for a full-stack developer with front-end experience at DreamIt Ventures grad and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia spinout Haystack Informatics. They work on monitoring patient privacy. You’d be employee No. 5 and work closely with CTO Terry Weiss and director of product Bernie Zang at University’s City Innovation Center @ 3401. But, as Zang put it, you’d work closely with everyone since you’d be No. 5.

Girl Develop It is hiring an operations lead. The group hired their first executive director two years ago, former Technical.ly events coordinator Corinne Warnshuis, who (:tear:) left us for the gig at the national women’s coding education nonprofit. The operations lead would be full-time employee No. 2 (or No. 3, see below) and be part of GDI’s ambitious plan for this year: “By the end of 2016, we expect to launch 10-15 additional chapters, evaluate the opportunity for international expansion and increase our membership to 100,000-120,000.”
If that’s not your thing, they’re also hiring a program manager. We think it’d be cool to grow a GDI team in Philadelphia.
Oh, and psst, visual marketing firm Curalate is hiring a ton after their $27.5 million Series C, but here’s a leadership role we noticed: Director of Financial Planning and Analysis. You’d report to New York City-based CFO Scott Casey, who held similar roles at consumer-facing giants like Tumblr, Zynga and Myspace.
