PeopleLinx raises $1.5M [Startup Roundup]

Plus: Edison Ventures eyes its eighth fund of $250 million, First Round Capital gets a new look and Instacart expands its Philly-area footprint. That and more in this week's Startup Roundup.

WHO’S GETTING FUNDED?

PeopleLinx, the Center City startup doing social media for enterprises, raised $1.5 million, according to an SEC filing. The company’s previous two rounds were equity, according to the filing, but this is a debt round. The raise is from previous investors, said spokesman Michael Idinopulos, and it will go toward new product development and marketing. The filing names Osage Venture Partners managing partner Nathanael Lentz , Tropos Network board chairman David Hanna and MissionOG partner Andy Newcomb as directors. Osage, Hanna and MissionOG are all previous investors. New York City venture firm Greycroft Partners also participated, Idinopulos said.

Safeguard Scientifics led a $10 million Series B for Syapse, a Silicon Valley-based medical data platform, according to a release.

Edison Ventures, the Lawrenceville, N.J.-based venture firm that has been quite active recently, will begin raising its eighth fund of about $250 million later this year, according to a release and reported by Philly Tech News. Their seventh fund was the same size, and as Philly Tech News points out, did not focus on Philadelphia investments, though the firm had previously said it would.

Also, founder Josh Kopelman was an early investor in a new venture capital firm called Upside Partnership, the New York Times reported. With Upside, founders of portfolio companies will receive a cut of the profits that the fund earns. The firm was founded by former First Round partner Kent Goldman.

WHO’S MAKING MOVES?

Instacart, the on-demand grocery service app, expanded to Montgomery County, Pa., according to a release. Find a map of Instacart’s coverage area here.

Curalate, the Center City visual analytics firm, poached their newest product manager from the New York TimesEugene Song.

WHO’S GETTING BUZZ?

Biomeme, the Old City-based mobile DNA test, was featured in Flying Kite. Meanwhile, we’ve heard the startup had a big hiring month in June, fresh off raising funding ($1.95 million to date, according to cofounder Max Perelman). Biomeme is now at nine full-time staffers, Perelman said.

RJMetrics‘ study about what factors influence the numbers of women in tech was featured in FastCompany. We covered the study last month.

Felicite Moorman, CEO of East Falls’ smart-home company Bulogics, was featured on NewsWorks about her project to renovate a historic East Falls property.
