Philadelphia Science Festival kicks off: three tech events we spotted

This is the fourth year for the festival, which features debates, lectures, hands on activities and exhibitions across nearly 100 events, which are coordinated by the Franklin Institute. Here are three tech events we found on the calendar.

This week the nine day Philadelphia Science Festival kicked off with a Science Carnival After-Hours. This is the fourth year for the festival, which features debates, lectures, hands on activities and exhibitions across nearly 100 events, which are coordinated by the Franklin Institute.

How is tech intersecting with the family-focused science event?

“There will be hands-on Lego Robot programming, where people can try their hand at coding, AT&T will have a demonstration exploring the technology behind your phone and, Chipocrite, a.k.a. Paul Weinstein, will be DJ’ing ‘chip music’ which repurposes old video game hardware and other non-traditional electronics as synthesizers – the results are catchy compositions combining nostalgic video games sounds with modern music influences,” said event spokesman John Latchaw.

Here are some events this week that we’re excited to see.

  • Clothes of the Future: Wearable Technology. Youngmoo Kim, Director of Drexel’s ExCITE Center, will lead the discussion. It will explore materials that can be used to monitor breathing or communicate spoken messages.
  • I Love My Science Job: [Wednesday April 30]  Not all science jobs take place in the lab! Get a 360° view of the diverse job opportunities within the science and technology industries and hear from entrepreneurs, journalists, public relations professionals and researchers who have one thing in common: they all love their jobs
  • Educator Forum [Friday, May 2] Earn ACT 48 credit and celebrate educators who improve the way students learn through the use of technology! This competition and conference promotes the sharing of exceptional practices, recognizes educators and innovative schools, and provides professional development in technology integration.Registration for this event is required. Presented by the School of the Future Partnership Foundation.
