Research and innovation have a new home at Penn.
Located in Penn’s new “South Bank” campus on the former 23-acre DuPont property in Grays Ferry, the “Pennovation Center” is a business incubator and lab space that aims to help the Penn community launch businesses, Penn recently announced. It’s part of Penn’s plan to expand its University City campus.
It builds off the work of Penn’s four-year-old UPstart program, which helps faculty and students create businesses, and gives those businesses a physical place to call home. At least one UPstart business is located in the Pennovation Center already: Novapeutics, a diabetes treatment company.
Another company using the space is KMeL Robotics, the robotics startup from Penn grads that focuses on the flying robots called quadrotors.
Building space at the South Bank campus is currently 200,000 square feet, but Penn hopes to develop that to 750,000 square feet over the next 20 years.
