Part of the city’s proposal for the $5M Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge.

The City of Philadelphia’s Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge entry was already named a finalist for a piece of a $5 million prize.

Now the Philadelphia Social Enterprise Partnership entry, which is led by the city and Good Company Ventures and backed by a host of stakeholders, many of which were first brought together last spring by the Knight Foundation, Delaware Valley Grantmakers and Technically Philly, is being short-listed as among the strongest candidates out there.

Vote to support Philadelphia’s bid here.

The short pitch is, as was first discussed back in April and further developed by GoodCompany Group in June, that Philadelphia is one of the country’s biggest, most attractive cities with all of the intractable, legacy urban problems that exist. Put another way, there is the right energy to attract and retain problem solvers here, and there is also overwhelming climate of problems that need to be solved — just the right climate for something transcendent to happen with a bit more of a push.

The PSEP proposal, as the Atlantic writes, “is admittedly a little heavy on jargon but we admire its scope: A big outreach effort combined with a well-defined mechanism for public-private collaboration on a small number of projects each year. This certainly seems doable.”
