More than 2,000 students from 100 local middle and high schools will build underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) as part of this year’s Greater Philadelphia SeaPerch Challenge. And now the students have a place to test their ROVs.

In partnership with the challenge, the Independence Seaport Museum at Penn’s Landing recently opened a test tank for students to see their ROVs in action. It’s even equipped with obstacles like the ones that the ROVs will have to face at the competition. The test tank is part of a program that offers on-site mentoring for SeaPerch Challenge participants.

If your SeaPerch team is interested in using the test tank, contact Education Coordinator Olivia Thomas at (215) 413-8630 or groupsales@phillyseaport.org. Visits have to be scheduled in advance.

The competition will be held during Philly Tech Week on April 26-27 at Drexel University‘s Daskalakis Athletic Center. Winners will advance to the national challenge.

Since it was founded six years ago, more than 1,500 students from more than 100 schools have participated in the Greater Philadelphia SeaPerch Challenge, according to a release from the Independence Seaport Museum.
