Project Engineer II

  • Location

    Baltimore, Delaware, National, Philadelphia

  • Type

    Full-Time Job

  • Category

    Ops / PM

The role of a Project Engineer II within Horsetail Technologies is one of creation. Any given week you will be building, engineering, and creating infrastructure; either from the ground up or to fit within the parameters of what a client already has. In particular what sets aside a Project Engineer II is that of scope, responsibility, and knowledge. We expect those in this role to understand the end goal of a project prior to beginning. That intrinsic knowledge is then carried through to the completion of a project. Those in this role need to be able to identify when and where it is necessary to modify the architectural planning of a project to better meet the needs of the customer’s end goal, all the while documenting and upholding the integrity of the project. A Project Engineer II meets or exceeds the following:

  • A firm understanding and deep knowledge in one or more of the following areas
    • Cloud Compute
      • AWS
      • Azure
      • Google Cloud
    • Hypervisors
      • VMware
      • Hyper-V
      • Xen
    • Network Engineering
      • Routing Architecture
      • Switching Architecture
    • Security & Firewall Architecture
    • Server Architecture
      • Windows
      • Linux
      • Unix
    • A flexible schedule
      • This role requires both extremes. Working typical 9 to 5 hours one day and switching over to working well past midnight the next day or week. Typically building the architecture is performed during the day while implementation is performed on weeknights or weekend evenings.
      • Those in this role must be capable of travel. That could be driving an hour away at times or it could mean flying to the other side of the country and spending 3-7 days living out of a hotel while onsite with a customer. Horsetail strives to maintain a superb work life balance with it’s employees. In general travel on projects is limited to once every other month for various projects.
    • Detail oriented
      • Being detail oriented is paramount in this position. Your work is highly sought after and highly trusted to be correct. Any mistakes at the design or engineering level can mean failure of the project. Being detail oriented also means reviewing your own work with an eye of another or from a higher level as a sanity check. Doing so lets you set the lense of how your design or changes will impact data, connectivity, users, customers, etc.
    • Highly organized
      • Projects are multi-step processes involving time scales from a few days to a few months. Juggling all of the tasks requires high levels of organization and a strict adherence to process.
    • Communication Skills
      • Project Engineer II employees are often called upon to be the driving force behind projects. This means many planning conference calls or meetings in which it is your duty to describe the technical details to the client but also describe how those technical details will effect them.
    • Learning Skills
      • The IT world is ever changing and project work is no exception, if anything it’s at the forefront of technological change. Any given month you may be tasked with learning a new technology from the ground up and expected to show it working within a dev environment.
    • Ownership of tasks or projects
      • Nearly all projects are owned by an engineer from start to finish. You may get an assist from other engineers on tasks you’re less familiar with but it’s important that whomever is assigned the project understands that they are the owner of that project and it’s their duty to see it through to completion.
      • In doing so this allows each engineer a great amount of pride as they complete projects.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and build technologies for customers in the form of projects while following the architectural documentation.
  • Document all projects from start to finish in full detail such that the customer can find 95% or greater of all answers within the documentation.
  • Providing tier 2 or tier 3 support to other technicians within Horsetail on any issues which need escalation.
  • Create knowledge base articles associated with work done, best practices, or new processes.
  • Lay the foundation and engineering groundwork for other teams to take the torch and build their services off of.
  • Work directly with customers as both the ambassador of Horsetail and the technical authority of Horsetail.
  • Provide internal training sessions to Horsetail staff as a way to spread and grow baseline knowledge within the organization.
  • Take ownership of projects, tasks, or processes from start to finish and seek ways to improve upon each of those.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Accomplishments

  • Four or more years of experience within the IT industry, specifically with high tier administration or engineering experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of work experience and certifications.
  • Certifications within the field of expertise
    • Specifically engineer level certifications

Technical Capabilities

  • The ability to whiteboard or draw out various technical designs and explain them to others.
  • The ability to document projects from beginning through to completion in a digestible manner.
  • Deep engineering level knowledge in one of the various fields:
    • Cloud Compute
      • AWS
      • Azure
      • Google Cloud
    • Hypervisors
      • VMware
      • Hyper-V
      • Xen
    • Network Engineering
      • Routing Architecture
      • Switching Architecture
    • Security & Firewall Architecture
    • Server Architecture
      • Windows
      • Linux
      • Unix
