Business Intelligence Analyst
SQL / EXCEL/ Tableau – Business Analyst / Operational Performance Analyst

Requirements

The Analyst creates, monitors, and analyzes operational performance reports and metrics related to financial and work volume commitments. This specialist will leverage detailed analytics to identify and recommend opportunities to improve cost efficiency, productivity and operational performance. The incumbent will assist in the development of work planning models and will conduct statistical and operational analyses in support of increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of existing models. In addition, the Analyst will lead formal initiatives and projects related to operational improvement opportunities that are identified by Resource Management.

Responsibilities

1. Plans, designs, creates and optimizes complex SQL, MS Excel, and MS Access scripts, reports, and databases
2. Develops complex mathematical, statistical and operational models and conducts analyses that relate field operation activities to financial results to assist Field Operations in understanding the costs associated with operational activities, as well as the situations and work practices that cause increased variances in those costs.
3. Supports capital and operating budget development for Field Operations with Accounting & Budgets; recommends and supports proposed budget amendments based on actual performance against planned work volumes and budgets.
4. Tracks and reports variances against work plans and budgets, including but not limited to:
o Reports of actual Field Operations work volumes against forecasted monthly work volumes.
o Reports of capital and operating expenditures against the planned budget.
o Reports of actual unit cost against planned unit costs.
5. Assists Field Operations in understanding and mitigating the situations that lead to variances.
6. Provides ongoing management and maintenance of the operational performance data for reporting into Field Operations, including but not limited to:
o Creating, mobilizing and distributing operational reports that track completion of departmental goals, including work volume and cost targets.
o Reporting existing and new operational performance metrics related to Field Operations.
o Improving data reporting methods for efficient use of time and for data accuracy.
7. Conducts advanced analysis on operational and financial metrics that are managed through Resource Management, including but not limited to:
o Analysis of forecasted work volumes and actual completed work volumes to understand variances.
o Monitoring data, work plan progress and generating reports related to work volumes and budgets managed from Resource Management.
o Identifies potential continuous improvement opportunities related to cost efficiency and productivity improvement; recommends work plan adjustments based on analysis of Resource Management operational and financial metrics.
o Leads project initiatives related to continuous improvement opportunities identified through Resource Management.
o Captures completed work volumes and cost data to generate and validate reports/metrics with associated capital and operational financial impacts and provides technical analysis of all work activities.
o Works with Resource Management Director, Field Operations, and Accounting and Finance to develop forecast projections, status reports, and investigates, assess, and reconciles performance. Identifies work plan variances, adjustments, and concerns; prepares written and verbal reports communicating recommendations and conclusions in clear, concise and effective manner for use by Resource Management and PGW senior management team.
8. Performs other special projects and assignments as requested.

Responsibilities

 Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Statistics, MIS or other related field of study required. Advanced degree preferred – MS/ MBA.
 5 to 7 years of relevant work experience within the utility industry preferred
 Must be a quick-learner with the ability to comprehend complex models and systems
 Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic and an eagerness to contribute in a team-oriented environment
 Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with a focused attention to detail, accuracy, and quality of end-results. Analytical consulting skills a plus.
 Strong communications skills with the ability to present and discuss technical information in a way that establishes rapport, persuades others and gains understanding.
 Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build long-term constructive and cooperative working relationships with co-workers, vendors, management and outside agencies
 Organizational, planning and follow-through skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under high pressure situations.
• Advanced computer skills with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office with advanced skills in Business Intelligence software / (SSRS), MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Visio and the ability to display ideas through presentations, flowcharts and graphs
 literate with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office with advanced skills in Visual Basic, MS-Excel, MS-Access as SQL-server and the ability to display ideas through presentations, flowcharts and graphs
 Must have basic programming skills with experience in data quality control, debugging methods, testing, implementing, and supporting database applications and reports
 Leadership ability with a willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions in order to provide guidance to lower level peer group and assist Resource Management Director in identifying the best people for special assignments and advancement.
 Decision making skills with the ability to recommend strategic direction for Field Operations and manage continuous improvement projects
Residency Requirement : All employees of the Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) must live in the City of Philadelphia for the duration of their employment. If a candidate does not live in the City of Philadelphia at the time of hire, he/she must move into the city within twelve (12) months of his/her hire date. Relocation available. Local candidates preferred.
