In this installment of First State First Start, where we ask technologists how they got into tech, we meet Zohdi Muharam, a 19-year-old, first year student at Delaware Technical Community College pursuing a degree in information security.
Muharam says he was 13 years old when he discovered his interest in coding.
So we asked him: since you’ve known since 13 that you wanted to work in tech, you must have taken a lot of coding courses during high school, right?
“I actually took a lot of business classes, marketing [classes],” says the 2016 Christiana High School graduate. Muharam participated in DECA, a business marketing education program for high school students. Still, he joined the group because he initially thought coding would be a part of the program.
Now that he’s in college, Muharam is taking advantage of every opportunity he has to gain knowledge and experience. As the new president of Delaware Tech’s Network Information and Computer Science (NICS) club, Muharam is planning activities and events to advance the group’s work “to promote an interest in computer science and computer security through lectures, exhibits and field trips” for the DelTech community.
What’s next for this ambitious future programmer? First, a summer internship working in information technology at a local bank, later, after graduation, Muharam says he plans to apply for a spot with coding school Zip Code Wilmington. Eventually, he wants to transfer to a 4-year university before he launches careers in both the government and private sectors.
