Meet Laurie Zerumsky, the social media manager of TEDxWilmington

By day, she's a development and marketing manager at Girls Inc. of Delaware. By night, she's helping run the well-known event series.

You know the saying: “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Maybe that is why North Wilmington resident Laurie Zerumsky spends most of her free time volunteering with local organization TEDxWilmington. Zerumsky is the development and marketing manager for Girls Inc. of Delaware and she’s also hard at work prepping for the upcoming TEDxYouth in Wilmington. She talked to us about what she does when she’s not at work.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love to exercise, enjoy a nice glass of red while watching Netflix (currently obsessed with “Sons of Anarchy” & “The InBetweeners”) and volunteer with TEDxWilmington.

How’d you get started with TEDx?

I have been a fan of TED talks for some time and last summer I decided to volunteer at the Annual Conference at The Queen and the rest is history. I am now serving on the TEDxWilmington Tribe as the social media manager, overseeing the social media channels. I love being behind the scenes of something so awesome. I am privileged to work along some of the best people I have ever met, including Ajit George, Ken Grant and Rhianon Husmann who have all been profiled on Technically Delaware. Being surrounded and involved with such a dynamic group of people who want to make the world the better place is continually inspiring.

Working on any side projects right now?

When I am not pulling the 9-5 at Delaware’s best kept secret, Girls Inc. of Delaware, I am volunteering my time with the Tribe at TEDxWilmington. Right now, we are preparing for what I think will be the event of the year, TEDxYouth at Wilmington. This event is happening on Sunday April 2, 2017, at Ursuline Academy. Students, alumni and faculty from five area schools were chosen from a large pool of applicants to give these TEDx talks. I have had the privilege of hearing the topics straight from the high school speakers themselves and I will tell you, I was blown away and I have tremendous hope for our future.

What are you reading right now?

I just finishing reading Luvvie Ayayi’s “I’m Judging You: The Do Better Manual.” Luvvie is a very fun, smart and this book is a quick read. Next, I’ll be re-reading Michael J. Fox’s memoir “Always Looking Up.” It’s a wonderful read.

What’s your favorite website to kill time?

I am on Pinterest a lot. It’s so great for recipes, planning my sister’s baby shower, friend’s upcoming wedding and even has some awesome ideas for fundraising which I can use at Girls Inc of Delaware.

What’s a recent movie you’ve seen?

I’m a big Disney fan and a kid at heart. I saw [the recent remake of] Beauty and the Beast on the day it was released. It was really wonderful and played great homage to the 1991 animated original.

What’s your current favorite song?

Anything Beyoncé. Friends will tell you she’s my life. I have a shirt that a friend made years ago that says exactly that.

Where’s the last place you went on vacation?

Thanks for the reminder that I need to schedule one. Last place I visited was Vegas in September 2016. Here I realized that I have aged significantly.

Lastly, do you cook? What’s your specialty?

Spicy buffalo cauliflower buffalo bites. It’s super easy to make and it’s much healthier that the wings!
