This digital media supervisor used to get fierce on the roller derby track

We talk to Erin Mulrooney about what she's doing when she's not working. Welcome to Off the Clock.

Tech culture can be so focused on work and efficiencies that it makes us forget everything else. Off the Clock is a series where we interview people in the tech scene but don’t ask any questions about work.

Erin Mulrooney loves being surrounded by strong, fearless women. So a roller derby team seemed like the perfect pastime for the digital media supervisor at Aloysius, Butler & Clark, a marketing firm with offices in Wilmington, Philly and Bloomsburg, Pa.
We had a chance to chat with Mulrooney and learn more about her time with the roller derby, the throwback TV show she’s been binge-watching and the nonprofit that’s close to her heart.

You used to be in the roller derby. How did you become interested in the sport?
I first got into roller derby when I was in grad school in Albany, N.Y. Before we had a practice space, we skated in the parking lot of a Walmart. I got interested in the sport because it’s a great community of strong, fearless women … and it keeps your butt in great shape!
What is the craziest thing that has ever happened during a roller derby bout?
I’ve had teammates break bones during bouts, but the craziest thing that ever happened to me was blocking this woman so hard she flew into the first row of seats trackside and took out a few spectators. Oops.
What kind of movies do you like to watch?
This is going to sound really boring, but I love documentary films the most. I like seeing people’s stories told from their own perspectives.
Do you have a show you are currently binge-watching?
I just binge watched all of the old Daria episodes – I loved that show when I was in high school so much.
What is your favorite thing to do after a stressful day in the office?
After a stressful day at work, I’d probably cook a nice dinner with my girlfriend, take our three greyhounds on a walk around the neighborhood (I also fundraise for Hamburg, Pa.-based Greytful Hearts Greyhound Rescue) and then meet up with friends at a bar in Fishtown [in Philadelphia] for a few cocktails.
Awesome! What is your go to meal, or comfort food, that you enjoy cooking?
Hmmmm … my favorite thing to cook right now is Indian food. I’ve been playing around with curry dishes and Indian spices for a few years, but I recently took a vegetarian Indian cooking class and now I’m obsessed with making paneer and kofta.
