The Kitchen has been putting out a few light-hearted video slam-dunks. But most recently, the production company’s founder, Zach Phillips, has been working on a broadcast-style documentary project. And it’s not about what you’d expect.
The podcast, Remaking Murdertown, takes on the heavy topic of crime in Wilmington.
Philips aims to give a unique view of the crime problem in Wilmington. In just a little over a month, the podcast has around 10,000 listens.
Here’s the first of three episodes so far:

Phillips got the idea when he was approached by the Delaware Center for Justice to create a series of videos about problems facing the juvenile justice system in Delaware. The idea was to shed light on things that are poorly designed or simply ineffective.
While Phillips is most-known for his video work, he decided that a radio-style product would be would more effective, so he pulled himself out of his comfort zone and tried something he has never done before. He created a podcast.
“It’s a statement on how we deal with the ‘problem’ neighborhoods and the ‘problem people,’” Phillips told Technical.ly. “The whole podcast is about hearing from a perspective we never get from any of the other media in Delaware.”
Phillips has collected a wealth of information from individuals on the streets of Wilmington, primarily young black males who he sees as being the most affected by crime in the city. He hopes to offer a unique perspective for those listening. You can also follow the project on Twitter.
