ICYMI: Here’s what else happened in #dctech this week

Georgetown-based Halcyon, an incubator for early-stage social impact entrepreneurs, is teaming up with Amazon Web Services to expand internationally.

The organization plans to host an intensive incubator program for early-stage, women-founded social enterprise tech startups in Bahrain. Halcyon will also team up with a local partner, Startup Bahrain, to run the 2021 Bahrain Women’s Intensive program. Women founders selected to participate in the program will receive mentorship and training from Halcyon’s network, be introduced to the U.S. market and have a chance to meet some investors. The cohort will also receive AWS cloud computing credits, technical support and mentorship from AWS experts.

“From the moment these entrepreneurs begin their experience virtually in January, they’ll receive the best support our network has to offer,” said Halcyon cofounder and CEO Kate Goodall in a statement. “Like all our other fellows before them, these women will find at Halcyon a community that believes in the power of their ideas to drive the world forward.”

Halcyon will announce the cohort of 10 ventures later this year, with tentative plans to bring them to its Georgetown headquarters in July 2021 for a weeklong residency.

• Yamaha WaterCraft Group launched two new websites built by Chantilly, Virginia-based Whereoware, a full-service digital marketing agency. Yamaha reported that site traffic has increased for the new sites, which feature some updated branding, enhanced user experience, high resolution imagery and video streaming capabilities.

• The U.S. Department of Commerce launched a new $25 million challenge to promote projects that address the economic and health risks brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic through entrepreneurship and innovation. The department is looking for projects that can prevent, prepare and respond to the coronavirus pandemic and future events. Applications for the challenge will be accepted until Dec. 3.

• Bethesda, Maryland-based GreenGen Ventures has invested an undisclosed amount into Pittsburgh-based Conservation Labs, a company building solutions and products for cost-effective and sustainable water usage. This investment comes after GreenGen Ventures made investments this past year in Datakwip, Senseware and Wynd Technologies.
• Ashley Perry, chief solutions officer at D.C.-based Socially Determined, was named among Modern Healthcare’s 2020 class of Top 25 Emerging Leaders. This annual list recognizes healthcare leaders for their early-career contributions.
• Maryland-based biotech company Novavax is working on building a new development unit to get its seasonal flu vaccine program off the ground. The company promoted Russell Wilson to executive VP and NanoFlu general manager to lead it.
