Get ‘code curious’ with New York Code + Design Academy

The proudly-basic, Jan. 26 intro to coding class is free. Get to it.

You know that friend who always talks about getting into coding but is daunted by the commitment? Or maybe that “friend” is actually, well, you?

We make it a mission to bring our readers consistent opportunities to expand their skills (and we’re proud to report that D.C. is home to many learn-to-code options) so here’s a new one — the D.C.-based campus of New York Code + Design Academy is running a series of intro to coding events called “Coding Kickstart” and the first one will take place this week.

“If you’ve ever wondered about what coding is and how it’s leveraged in business and everyday life — this series is for you!” organizers write. The event is aimed at those who have little or no experience, and will cover topics like basic lingo and how coding can be incorporated in your career path.

The first in this free event series is planned for this coming Thursday, Jan. 26 and will be held in the evening at NYCDA’s 15th Street campus (which is, incidentally, in the same building as 1776 and General Assembly).

NYCDA D.C. plans to run the series for as long as possible, Community Manager Manny Pérez told Technical.ly. The mission of the event, he added, has a lot to do with inclusion.

“Generally speaking, part of what we focus on (and a big part of my job in particular) at NYCDA is pushing the message of inclusion and diversity in tech,” he wrote. “We realize that there are a ton of people who have been left behind or otherwise ignored by the industry, so by offering a free event that teaches the very basics of coding, we’re trying to open our community as sort of a gateway into the local tech scene.”
