D.C.-based Barkly, the on-demand dog-walking startup, just launched an Android app — cofounder David Comiskey told Technical.ly the app went live in the Google Play store last week.
The one-year-old, bootstrapped company is still run by a team of just three, so being available on two operating systems is big. Comiskey hopes the new app will help Barkly dig deeper into each of the communities it serves. As of now that includes D.C., Baltimore and, most recently, Philadelphia.
Reflecting on a year of Barkly (renamed from Wepwo) and the recent expansion, Comiskey told Technical.ly that yes, all three cities are very different. But for Barkly, that’s very much intentional. In D.C., for example, the company will do customer acquisition by holding in-person meet-and-greets at big apartment complexes. Barkly brings the dog walkers and the building managers advertise to residents — done.
Baltimore, meanwhile, has fewer large apartment buildings and is more neighborhood-centric. Comiskey admits it “took a while” to get to the point where Barkly is named in word-of-mouth interactions, but by now things are going well. Philly, apparently, is some mixture of both.
In addition to launching an Android app, Barkly also recently began its expansion into Bethesda. Comiskey says the roadmap ahead involves seeking even more traction in the current three cities, and then expanding “when we’re ready.” For now, mastering the style of customer acquisition in Baltimore versus D.C. versus Philly is key to any future growth.
And Barkly’s already accomplished a lot for one year. The team will be celebrating with their second annual “Woofstock” event on Aug. 6 — the party is scheduled to take place in Storey Park in NoMa. Be there, and definitely bring your ?.
