New year, new office: Coworkrs’ design guru has some tips for organizing your space

Who knew candles could double as desk organizers?

There’s no better way to start a new year than with a clean house. (In fact, it’s a Chinese New Year tradition.) For those of us that work from home, this reporter included, that means getting our home offices in order, too.

Last month, Coworkrs opened up a location in the Financial District in addition to its Gowanus and Flatiron offices. (A Bushwick location, as we previously reported, is also in the works.) So, we’d presume, the company’s team knows a thing or two about sprucing up a space. Here are a few tips the company’s head of design, Elide Gabrowski, recently sent over to us by email.

  • Use glass to keep clutter away. “Creating an organized space will help your productivity level by leaps and bounds. A glass tabletop is a great way to keep things organized: simply put, you can’t hide clutter under a clear surface.”
  • Improve your shelf life. “Creating shelf space is key to increasing surface area to store files, books or boxes. Our local Ikea is a valuable treasure trove for on-a-budget resources such as cabinets and storage bins. Dumbo’s West Elm also has an incredible selection of floating shelves and office accessories.”
  • Take a seat. “Invest in a great chair: something comfortable that fosters good posture. Take the time to find something chic for your space. If you’re lucky, you might find something vintage at Brooklyn Flea that adds a funky element to your space. CB2 also has an amazing selection of office-suitable chairs that are great for spaces small and large. A personal favorite of mine is the Rouka!”
  • Stay focused with vibrant wall colors. Benjamin Moore’s Wedding Veil is a great, crisp white that goes well with any design style or aesthetic. If you are looking for a deeper shade of gray, Benjamin Moore’s Raccoon Fur is a winner. Painting an accompanying wall with chalkboard paint is a fun way to keep a to-do list or to make room to brainstorm.”
  • Brighten up your work area. “Desk lamps add functional flair and height to your home office. Beam in Williamsburg has an incredible array of lighting choices. Be sure to use soft white light, which is good for any time of day.”
  • Delight your nose, too. “Scents are so important to me, and candles always put me in a good mood. You can buy local from Brooklyn Candle Studio — I love their sweet fig Mason jar candle. Once you’re done burning the candle, it becomes the perfect pen or paper clip holder.”
