Coworking space The Yard expands to Gowanus

The Yard is in expansion mode. It just announced a new spot in Philadelphia, its first location outside of New York, and plans to add more spaces across the country.

Full disclosure: Technical.ly Brooklyn lead reporter Tyler Woods works for The Yard. He was not involved in this report.

The Yard, a New York-based coworking space provider founded in 2011, has signed a new lease at 157 13th St. in Gowanus. The new location is expected to open in November. It’s one in a series of expansions the company currently has planned.
This will be The Yard’s second location in Brooklyn with 24,800 square feet of space and an entrance through a converted loading dock. Previously a factory building, The Yard’s new spot has exposed brick walls and wooden beam ceilings. Members can also use the outdoor space on the roof-top deck and grab a cup of coffee at the in-house cafe.
The Yard offers workspaces with private offices, conference rooms, event spaces, lounges, decorative art work and amenities, like WiFi and 24/7 access. Currently, The Yard has five locations in Manhattan and one at 33 Nassau Ave. in Williamsburg, where The Yard said that more than 100 businesses operate.
Earlier in May, The Yard also announced that it is opening its first location outside of New York, in Center City Philadelphia, which also has a roof deck and 24,000 square feet of work space.
“Our diverse community of members, which includes artists, architects, startups, jewelry designers, consultants … truly enjoy being able to work near where they live,” said Richard Beyda, The Yard cofounder said. “We have existing Brooklyn members who already commute from the Gowanus-Park Slope area that will benefit from a new space in their neighborhood.”
Members can also use an online hub called The BackYard through which they can communicate with other members across all Brooklyn locations, Beyda said.
The asking price for the Gowanus location for $40 per square foot, Beyda said, though he couldn’t share the final price. Both the landlord — 304 LLC — and The Yard were represented by Bob Klein of Kalmon Dolgin Affiliates during the real estate leasing process.
In addition to New York and Philadelphia, The Yard is planning to expand to Boston, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles and Toronto, according to an announcement from the company released May 26.
News of the Yard’s expansion comes shortly after Dumbo Startup Lab, one of the early coworking spaces in Brooklyn, announced it was shutting down due in part to the changing coworking landscape and coworking giant WeWork’s entrance into Brooklyn.
