This is an open call to print your own 3D city with Wide Open Arts

Send them your 3D building. Make some art brut.

Wide Open Arts is curating a 3D-printed city for the Outsider Art Fair this January, and they’re looking for local designers to submit buildings.
“We are in search of contemporary, modern and ancient towers; industrial or religious; fantastical or utilitarian; brutalist or gothic…from air traffic control towers to bell towers to tower blocks and sky scrapers,” Wide Open Arts promo material says. Their piece is called Babel. “Imaginary cities and surreal structures have long been the domain of many outsider artists. This exhibition aims to create a collective multi-authorial installation that descends from the Fluxus mail art movement.”
The printing itself will be contributed by the East Williamsburg-based Voodoo Manufacturing, a 3D-printing studio that opened recently and whose founder wants to usher in another industrial revolution.
The Outsider Arts Fair is an international art fair based on the concept of art brut, or raw art. The phrase comes from French artist and curator Jean Debuffet, who defined it as follows: “We understand by this term works produced by persons unscathed by artistic culture, where mimicry plays little or no part (contrary to the activities of intellectuals). These artists derive everything…from their own depths, and not from the conventions of classical or fashionable art.”
Submissions for the 3D city will be open from now until Dec. 15. For more information on the specs and where to send your file, go here.
