Dark Matter Manufacturing event showcases creative, weird projects

Coworking and maker space, Dark Matter Manufacturing, hidden away along Flatbush Avenue, on the edge of Fort Greene, held a bit of a social night this past Friday at the space, called “Internodal 3.”

Members of the space and its friends presented their work. Last week’s Digital Art Friday came from one of the space’s members. We stopped by and got a look at the space.

Here are a few tidbits we picked up from the talks:

J.B. Michel, one of the Brooklyn’s many French entrepreneurs, is running his new startup, Quantified Labs, from Dark Matter. It is, for now, primarily a consultancy that helps companies make use of giant pools of data. “We don’t use anything really fancy,” Michel said in his talk. “We just try to know the core of the data really well.” Michel told Technical.ly Brooklyn that down the road the team is interested in buildings scaleable products of their own, but for now they are focusing on the practice of using data and helping companies build theirs.
1stAveMachine is a Dumbo video agency that represents sixteen directors. The firm is all about working strange creations into the ads they make. For example, this speed test video for Google’s Chrome browser:

Party is a company that started in Tokyo but has recently arrived in New York. They have the distinction of being asked by Lady Gaga to come up with something weird for her appearances in Japan and then being told their initial ideas were too weird for Gaga. That collaboration yielded a lifesize doll of the star, which they made with the world’s most advanced sex toy makers. The Gaga dolls are available for bookings.
