In name, DevOps combines development and IT operations. In practice, the methodology looks to make the different parts of the process of building software work together better. It can get pretty technical.
“It’s looking at not only how we build software, but test software and manage infrastructure all as one thing,” said Delali Dzirasa, president of Spark Baltimore-based dev firm Fearless Solutions.
But at its heart, the approach is about bringing people together to collaborate and communicate.
So it’s fitting that a conference event focusing on DevOps has taken off since the first edition was held in Ghent, Belgium, in 2009.
DevOpsDays is coming to Baltimore for the first time next month. The event is set to be held at Columbus Center in Inner Harbor March 7-8.

Dzirasa said he first attended a DevOpsDays event in D.C. two years ago. He gave a lightning talk, and met then-D.C. event chair Nathan Harvey. Now the two are among the core team organizing the Baltimore event.
The schedule is bringing together three kinds of dev event programming:

  • 30-minute keynotes: One is called “The Rainbow of Death”
  • Ignite-style lightning talks: Speakers get five minutes and 20 slides where the task is to “say something really good but say it fast,” Dzirasa said.
  • Open spaces: Unconference-style breakout sessions put together by organizers on the fly at the event.

The event has a lot of interest, so only a few tickets are left. Readers can use the code TECHNICALLY-BALTIMORE to register and get 10 percent off.
