Verizon tweaks fiber upgrade schedule after confusion

After the Maryland People’s Counsel stepped in, Verizon agreed to push back a date requiring Baltimore-area residents to schedule installation of fiberoptic cable in their homes.
According to a notice issued by the People’s Counsel on Dec. 13, Verizon agreed to move a deadline for people to set an appointment from December to February 15, 2017.
Verizon is looking upgrade from copper wire to fiber for home phones in areas such as Towson, Columbia and Glen Burnie, as well as Rockville and Bethesda. There are no plans to bring fiber to Baltimore city.
The People’s Counsel said that residents were confused by notices that said residents had to schedule an appointment by Dec. 14 or have their service turned off.
Verizon has said it plans to retire all copper lines by the end of next year.
