Section1 is planning a crowdfunding campaign [Startup Roundup]

Plus: Three tech firms land on Baltimore Magazine's “Best Places to Work” list.

WHO’S MAKING MOVES

DreamIt Health Baltimore named Shervonne Cherry as Program Manager. Cherry moved to the accelerator following a long stint with Mindgrub, most recently as creative and social strategy lead. In her new role, she will be managing day-to-day operations for DreamIt Health Baltimore. That includes managing budgets, events, serving as the primary liasion for companies and staying connected with the local tech community.
Uber is committing to hire 50,000 drivers in urban communities on the East Coast over the next year. UberUp, which is a partnership with Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, launched on Friday in Maryland with a press conference in Annapolis. It comes as the state hits a crossroads on how to regulate ridesharing services.
Section1 is getting ready to launch a crowdfunding campaign that will serve as a primary fundraiser for the art park. Richard Best, founder of the urban art park under the Jones Falls Expressway, tells Technical.ly the campaign will include a chance to invest in the art, and get something in return for the shares. The organization is planning a party to launch the new initiative later this month.
Cerecor, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company based in Canton, acquired rights from Eli Lillly Co. to develop a Phase 2-ready, potent and selective kappa opioid receptor (KOR). The drug is designed to treat addiction and psychiatric disorders, and could even help with nicotine withdrawal.
Tenable Network Security is looking toward the cloud. The Columbia-based cybersecurity company announced a new vice president. Sean Molloy, formerly of Qualys, will oversee development of a line of Tenable products in the cloud. The first product, set to debut later this month, is Nessus Cloud. It offers Tenable’s Nessus program to protect SaaS platforms and local systems in a cloud service overseen by the company.

WHO’S GETTING BUZZ

We’re a little late to the party since it’s the February issue, but it’s worth calling attention to the fact that a few tech companies were among Baltimore Magazine’s Best Places to Work in 2015. Mindgrub earned kudos for their people-centered approach (and bobbleheads). Meanwhile, OrderUp is still hiring, and they have a robot that controls tunes. Tenable Network Security is also on the list, and earned comparisons to Google.

Companies: Mindgrub / Section1 / Cerecor Inc. / OrderUp / Tenable Holdings / DreamIt Health / Uber
