WHO’S GETTING FUNDED

Early 2015 continues to be a good time to raise money for Baltimore-area health and biotech startups.
PapGene sold $3 million in equity, according to an SEC filing. The biotech company grew out of a discovery at Hopkins Medicine which found that fluid obtained during a Pap smear can be used to test for ovarian or endometrial cancer, as well as cervical cancer. Here’s how it works:

WellDoc, Inc., sold $4.23 million in equity, according to an SEC filing. The Baltimore-based company makes BlueStar, a “mobile prescription therapy” that provides guidance for patients with Type 2 diabetes.
Vheda Health was awarded a $100,00 grant from the Maryland Industrial Partnerships program (MIPS). The Columbia-based health IT startup makes a mobile platform that specifically targets patients with chronic diseases. Through the grant, the company will work with the Center for Health Information and Decision Systems (CHIDS) and the University of Maryland business school to further develop its system.

WHO’S MAKING MOVES

Vaccinogen is moving to the city. The biotech company, which is in Phase II testing for a vaccine that’s designed to treat Stage II colon cancer, is relocating from Frederick to a new corporate headquarters at 949 Fell St. in Fells Point. CEO Andrew L. Tussing said the move will help the company attract top talent.
Drizly, which recently became Baltimore’s first booze delivery app to launch (but not the last), is partnering with Jailbreak Brewing Company. Until the keg is tapped, the company will deliver growlers of Jailbreak. It starts Wednesday at 3 p.m. Here’s what’s on tap.
Protenus, which we recently profiled, is partnering with Sage Growth Partners. Baltimore Business Journal reports that the DreamIt Health alums are bringing in the healthcare consulting firm to help with business development.

WHO’S GETTING BUZZ

You’re all getting buzz. Baltimore is on another startup cities listicle. InfoWorld named Baltimore one of “the best 15 cities (you didn’t think of) for high-paying tech jobs.” The write-up says the city “bubbles with sophistication and culture.”
Greg Cangialosi of MissionTix/Betamore/Baltimore Angels/etc. and Red Owl Analytics’ Guy Filippelli were named “Influential Marylanders” for 2015 by the Maryland Daily Record.

Companies: Protenus / Vaccinogen / WellDoc / Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine / RedOwl Analytics
