Allovue wins pitch competition at Harvard [Startup Roundup]

Plus: Details on the three startups receiving funding from TEDCO's Propel Baltimore Fund.

WHO’S GETTING BUZZ

Edtech startup Allovue bested 11 other startups at Harvard last weekend to win the LearnLaunch conference pitch competition, as CityBizList first reported. Allovue founder Jess Gartner emails: “We won some very tasty chocolates, as well as the chance to share Allovue’s vision and mission with the 600+ attendees of LearnLaunch.” Coming on the heels of Gartner’s inclusion in Forbes’ 30 Under 30, Gartner said the national press over the last month has been “awesome to have opportunities to shine a national spotlight on the cool stuff that’s happening here in Baltimore.”

WHO’S GETTING FUNDED

Breethe, Inc., sold $810,000 in equity, according to an SEC filing. The company, run by world-class heart and lung surgeon, Dr. Bartley Griffith is based at the University of Maryland BioPark. According to a Baltimore Business Journal profile, Griffith is working to develop an artificial lung, and he founded the company to commercialize the innovation.
Information about startup funding rounds don’t always contain the identity of the backers, but we took note of one release this week that revealed an influential backer of three recent sizable funding rounds. TEDCO’s Propel Baltimore Fund was involved in $2 million rounds each for edtech startups Three Ring and Citelighter. Both companies recently relocated to Baltimore from New York City. The Propel Baltimore Fund was also involved in a $500,000 round for ecommerce widget OpiaTalk. All three companies are Betamore members.
